The Village Potter
Gérard Carrière became interested in craft pottery in 1980 in Kapuskasing. He started making his own pottery, but during his second course, the instructor quits and he continues to pursue pottery at home and at the local cultural centre in preparation for his eventual retirement from secondary school principalship. After five years of learning from books and experience, he began to teach evening courses. A solo exhibition in 1988 was a crowning moment. Friends came in large numbers and purchase most of the pieces. What a boost! In 1995, Gérard retired and moved home to Noëlville near the French River, a mecca for tourism. He creates pieces for visitors to come and buy as a souvenir of the French. The studio is situated on Bear Lake, a widening of the Wolseley River, which is a tributary of the French River. Gérard’s pottery is traditional, decorative and utilitarian: creations to enliven the home, the table, the office or the yard. Gérard participates in a few craft shows a year from Northern Ontario to Toronto. Friends and would-be potters can join him for an introduction to pottery. Gérard has not lost his taste for teaching and he loves to reveal the secrets of the clay. For him, she is the friendly clay dancing on his potter’s wheel and getting ready to go back to the fire to be reborn again, also the mud hanging on to his boots, but especially the remnants of the ancient mountains which once covered our Canadian Shield, and finally the mysterious and rich mother of all life.

Gérard s’intéresse à la poterie en 1980 à Kapuskasing. Il commence par lui-même. Au 2e mini-cours, l’instructeur quitte et Gérard est le seul à poursuivre chez lui et au Centre de loisirs culturels. Il prépare sa retraite éventuelle de l’enseignement. Il est directeur au secondaire. Après 5 années d’apprentissage par les livres et l’expérience, il accepte d’enseigner quelques cours en soirée. Suit une exposition solo en 1988. Un moment de gloire : les amis viennnent en grand nombre et achètent la majorité des pièces en exposition. Quel encouragement à poursuivre dans ce loisir! En 1995, Gérard prend sa retraite et vient s’installer à Noëlville, près de la rivière des Français. Un beau coin pour le tourisme. Un beau loisir pour créer et intéresser les visiteurs à cet artisanat plurimillénaire. L’atelier est situé sur les bords du lac à l’Ours, un élargissement de la rivière Wolseley tributaire de la rivière des Français. La poterie de Gérard est traditionnelle, décorative et utilitaire : des créations pour enjoliver le foyer, la table, le bureau, la cour. Gérard participe à quelques ventes par année à l’extérieur entre le nord ontarien et Toronto. Les amis et intéressés peuvent se joindre à lui pour apprendre les éléments de la poterie. Gérard n’a pas perdu le goût de l’enseignement et il aime bien révéler les secrets de la glaise. En effet, celle-ci est tantôt l’argile qui danse sur son tour de potier, tantôt la boue qui s’attache à ses bottes, tantôt la grande glaise mystérieuse qui donne vie à tout ce qui pousse, à tout ce qui vit.
