Spirit features the work of photographer Kathy Browning and woodworker and soapstone sculptor Gene Solomon. Solomon’s poignant sculptures are juxtaposed against Browning’s stirring photography, creating a multi-sensory experience for the viewers and allowing them to connect with nature in a very real way.
Of his work, Gene Solomon says that “by enhancing the natural beauty that surrounds us all, the finished product, whether it be wood, stone or canvas, reveals the spiritual force that lives within each piece for all to see, feel and enjoy.”
The work of both artists exemplifies the beauty of nature found in Northern Ontario, and the connection that we have to it. Browning’s digitally manipulated images encourage the audience to view nature as interconnected and unified, while Solomon’s sculptures present a personal and individual representation of the effects of nature on the person.
Kathy Browning learns about land and water and her relationship to them through the work that she creates. Growing up in Thunder Bay, her relationship to landscape has inspired her to create photographically for over 30 years.
“I grew up studying my grandfather’s rock specimens from mining projects,” says Browning. “I found that I needed to be able to study the rock cuts photographically in terms of composition, colour, light, shape and form.”
Spirit will be on display at Artists on Elgin from Tuesday, August 3 to Friday, August 27. Join the artists Kathy Browning and Gene Solomon on Saturday, August 7 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for an opening reception. Artists on Elgin is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
