September 1 to 26, 2009
A show by Alison Storey and Catharine Cribbs entitled Imprints is on at Artists on Elgin in the month of September. This show takes you on a journey through the artistic lives of these two Northern artists. The exhibit shows 47 print pieces, 24 by Cathy and 23 by Alison. Cathy is currently living in South Porcupine, Ontario where she continues to create art in a number of different mediums. Cathy and Alison have been friends for many years and started making prints together in 1983. Alison now lives in Sudbury, Ontario where she is a practicing artist, working in several mediums. They are hoping this show will bring attention to print making in Northern Ontario. “There are not many print makers in the North. Print making is a traditional art the originates in the East.”- Alison Storey. The show features prints made using techniques such as Etching, Dry Point using zinc and copper plates, Collography, Woodcut, Linocut and Monoprints. Every piece of work is an original.
Artist`s Statement
An ancient Jewish proverb says, ‘man makes plans and the gods laugh.’ This statement pretty well describes my relationship with printmaking. Technical demands are offset with a myriad of experimental byways. An unexpected ‘gift’ may reveal itself when a fresh print is pulled. That anticipated moment, when technique and exploration come together in a new creation, keeps me enthralled. In my own small way, I laugh with the gods. - Catharine Cribbs
