Artists on Elgin is hosting an exhibition for the artists participating in the show OF THE ELEMENTS opening on November 2nd. This show combines pieces made of basic elements of the earth.
The three participating artists represent the kind of work being produced in our local area and the diversity of ideas and themes being explored in art today. This exhibition also reflects the variety of media being used.
Helmi Kurki is an exciting artist whose art-making includes sculptural and traditional stained glass pieces. In this exhibition she will present large panel pieces and a number of deviceful pieces created using stream of consciousness technique; recording multifarious thoughts and feelings to a piece without regard to logical argument or sequence. Kurki's style is mainly characterized by its organic nature, and its highly-stylized, flowing forms and geometric shapes with a little bit of fantasy.
Helena Lang grew up in Finland and developed a love for art at young age. In this exhibition, she will present pieces from her primary medium of interest, textiles. Lang's work is woven with 100% cotton fabric and interlaced with sets of threads that compose the original design. Lang reinforces her pieces by hand to give strength and durability. Her process includes cutting, ironing and hand sewing all of the visual elements of each piece. Ultimately, each of her pieces has a unique modern flare embodied in an ancient form.
Anthony Okmanas is a wood sculptor who specializes in burl bowls and vessels. His art takes him in search of the essence of the woods which he uses to make his craft. Okmanas uses wood he salvages from sustainable forests. He refers to these pieces as "Jewels of the Forest." He describes his process as very organic, starting with rough and crude materials. "By peeling away the layers, I attempt to reveal another reality.ultimately unlocking its true reality and essence." ~ A. Okmanas
The exhibition opens November 2 until 20, 2009.
